FORT WORTH -- Police say they suspect a man fatally shot the mother of his child and then shot and wounded himself Wednesday night.

Officers were dispatched to a reported shooting about 9:20 p.m. at the Prima Vera Apartments, 2201 E. Berry St., said Officer Sharron Neal, a police spokeswoman. When they arrived two minutes later, they discovered a 23-year-old woman dead in the courtyard from an apparent gunshot wound.

The victim was identified as Natasha McDade by the Tarrant County medical examiner. She died of a gunshot wound to the head.

Officers also found Raheem Smith, 36, in the courtyard with a gunshot wound, she said.

The investigation revealed that the victim and Smith have a child together, Neal wrote in an email. Police believe that Smith came to the apartments and confronted the woman in the courtyard area where he shot her and then shot himself.

Smith was in critical condition Thursday morning at a hospital, Neal said. However, he is expected to a survive.

Investigators have obtained an arrest warrant for Smith on suspicion of murder, she said.
