Auto sales in North Texas' four largest counties rose 6.5 percent in February to 24,823, putting them up 12.5 percent in the year's first two months, according to new vehicle registration numbers compiled by Freeman Publishers in Dallas.

Tarrant County didn't participate in the rise in February, as new vehicles sold here slipped 8 percent. But Tarrant sales were up nearly 2 percent for the year.

The Freeman figures include registrations at car rental fleets, which in Tarrant County include those at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport and can skew year-to-year comparisons.

Collin County was the strongest performer, with a gain of 25 percent in February and 30.5 percent for the year.

It's followed by Dallas County, which was up 13.5 percent in February and 13.4 percent for the year.

Denton County's new vehicle sales edged up less than 1 percent in February and are up 27.4 percent for the year.

The area figures compare with national gains of 4 percent in February and 8 percent for the year, according to Automotive News.
