Bracket Filling Tips
Embrace the horror. There are eight to 10 teams that can win this thing.
The best chance of the 12/5 upset is Cal over UNLV. Normally the 12/5 is a lock for a stunner but all four look like the chalk will win. The best chance is Cal.
Look out for Ohio State. The Buckeyes have veteran players in DeShaun Thomas and Aaron Craft, who both played in the Final Four last season. The Buckeyes are the No. 2 seed in the same region where Gonzaga is the No. 1.
This will not be the year of the mid-major. Gonzaga is the first time in forever a team from a non-major conference is a one seed, but just be wary. They are good, and they have solid inside players, but they have tough potential matchups against Wisconsin, Kansas State or Ohio State. The other cute nontraditional power is New Mexico. The Lobos have the right draw to reach the Sweet 16 but no more.
Don’t be afraid to go with Miami. The selection committee really blew it by giving the Hurricanes a two seed in the same region as Indiana. The Hurricanes are a veteran team with one of the best guards in the country in Shane Larkin and a coach in Jim Larranaga who reached the Final Four with George Mason.
Beware of the teams led by one-and-doners. This means don’t buy UCLA, which is led by likely NBA goner Shabazz Muhammad. He can play. How much does he care? Just stay away from the Pac-12.
Indiana is the best team but has a major weakness. This is IU’s best team since Bobby Knight had it rolling in Bloomington in the early ’90s. The Hoosiers have a pair of lottery picks in Cody Zeller and Victor Oladipo and a host of capable perimeter shooters. But the Hoosiers want to get out and play and run. Any team that can slow them down and play a disciplined half-court set gives them trouble.
Go hard on the Big Ten. This is the best this conference has been in more than a decade. Indiana, Ohio State and Michigan State are all decent picks for the Final Four. Michigan, however, is soft.
Creighton can beat Duke. Creighton has a wonderful player in Doug McDermott, who could potentially go against Duke forward Ryan Kelly in a second-round game. Duke can really score, but if the 3s aren’t falling, the Blue Devils are vulnerable.
With a bracket this wide open, don’t be afraid to rely on going by team mascots, uniform scheme or Nate Silver.
