A trio of Northwest High School seniors - Damon King, Kassidy Knight and Matthew Walker - has been named National Merit Finalists in the 58th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

These three finalists were selected from approximately 16,000 semifinalists. More than half of the estimated 15,000 finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the title of Merit Scholar.

“We are extremely proud of Damon, Kassidy and Matthew,” Northwest High School Principal Jason Childress said. “They are hardworking, talented and deserving of this recognition.”

King plans to attend Brigham Young University and study financial law. King, a resident of Fort Worth, is the speech and debate captain at Northwest High and a member of National Honor Society.

Knight, a resident of Haslet, plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin and study industrial engineering. Knight is the Northwest High student council president, senior class vice president, a member of National Honor Society and a cheerleader.

Walker also plans to attend UT-Austin and pursue technical writing. Walker, a resident of Newark, is a member of the Northwest High band, Leading Individuals Fighting for Tolerance and National Honor Society.

King, Knight and Walker each have maintained an outstanding academic record throughout high school and earned SAT scores that confirmed their performance on the qualifying test.
