A 1-0 victory against Keller last Tuesday lifted the Carroll boys soccer team into sole possession of first place in the district standings, and now the Dragons are in complete control of their own destiny.

Coach Greg Oglesby said he was pleased with this team's effort against Keller, especially given the significance of the game.

“It was a tough game, and the boys played well,” Oglesby said. “We actually scored three goals, but they called two of them back. But the offense was very productive, and the defense was rock-solid.

“Most of their chances were from distance, or contested, or not real good angles, so I was pleased with how we played on both sides of the ball.”

Oglesby said the initial goal his team set for itself this season was to make the playoffs, but said that a district title would be a nice addition as well.

“We don't talk about it a lot at this point in time in the season, because we want to keep our focus on the playoffs,” Oglesby said. “But it was a goal we had at the beginning of the season. It wasn't the most important goal, but the boys know that it is right there for us.

“If we win our final two games, there is nothing that anybody else can do. The main thing is, I want them playing well as we get close to the playoffs.”

With the Dragons in first place as the postseason looms, it is easy to remember the 2011 season when Carroll went undefeated and won state.

Oglesby said the vibe on this year's team is different than in 2011, but with good reason.

“It's different, but it's different because it is different personnel,” Oglesby said. “The season has gone differently. We've had four losses, and we've had a lot of injuries this year. We were very fortunate that season, because everyone pretty much stayed healthy.

“That was a big part of our being undefeated. But there is still great chemistry, and we pride ourselves on that and work on that. It's not something that happens by accident, so we've still got a real good team spirit.”

Carroll will square off with Haltom in its season finale on Friday in Haltom City, and Oglesby said he expects a tough contest.

“We go to their place, and they play on grass,” Oglesby said. “Usually at this time of year, there is no grass left on it, because they play football and then soccer. It's the last game of the season and they are out of the playoffs, so there are a lot of things that factor in there that concern you.

“We just have to play our game and focus on the things we do, and I am sure we will be fine.”
