FORT WORTH -- It turns out the large crowd last Wednesday at the Fort Worth Zoo was a record-breaker.

Zoo officials said Monday that 26,370 patrons visited the park, beating the previous single-day attendance record of 25,804 that was set on the half-price Wednesday during spring break of March 2010.

"North Texas families once again turned out in great numbers," Michael Fouraker, Zoo executive director, said in a news release. "Nearly 117,000 people visited the zoo over the nine-day spring break period, giving us not only a record-breaking Wednesday but also a healthy attendance for the rest of the week."

Those wanting to visit the zoo had to deal with traffic snarls as construction along Interstate 30 due to Chisholm Trail Parkway construction, but the Fort Worth Police Department and the zoo planned several alternate routes to ease congestion.
