Lady Tigers miss opportunities vs. Timberview

While Timberview softball celebrated its continued undefeated run in District 7-5A last week, Mansfield High had to lament a lost game with missed opportunities.

Mansfield lost 2-1 in a clash of 7-5A’s two undefeated teams and crosstown rivals. Timberview starting pitcher Miriah Denson struck out 11 and the Lady Tigers couldn’t break through against her and take control of the game.

Coach Jennifer Haltom knew it would be a tough game but was disappointed in the way Mansfield lost. The Lady Tigers had two key errors that led to Timberview runs.

“Defense didn’t come to play tonight,” Haltom said. “We left too many runners on base and and didn’t do a good enough job in the field.”

It’s just one loss, however. Haltom understands there’s a lot of softball to be played before the district schedule wraps up. Mansfield still sits in second place, one game back of Timberview.

“We’ve had a really good preseason and haven’t faced a ton of adversity,” she said. “We’ll see how this sets in and how we turn it around.”

Furious start to district for Summit baseball

Summit has exploded into District 15-4A play with two dominant wins.

The Jaguars have won their two district games with a combined score of 33-3. Summit pounded Arlington Seguin 17-1 before dominating Lake Ridge 16-2 last week.

In the win against Seguin, Summit scored 17 runs on just nine hits, taking advantage of five Seguin errors. Ross Roark picked up the win and Sam Durland homered for Summit.

Against Lake Ridge, Summit used the deep-ball to blow past the Eagles. Summit hit three home runs, two from Corey Pickens and one from Brady Usherwood.

Pickens also pitched and picked up the win.

Legacy baseball undefeated to start district

Coach David Walden said before the season started that he had no idea how this season would play out. Legacy graduated a ton of seniors and he had a pitching staff that was new to the varsity level.

So far, so good for the Broncos. Legacy has won its first three district games in 15-4A, including some impressive wins against playoff favorites.

Legacy thumped Lancaster 23-0 in the opener before beating Red Oak and Waxahachie.

In the Broncos’ 10-4 win against Red Oak, Legacy scored 10 runs on 10 hits to help Matthew Dickey pick up the win.

The win against Waxahachie, a consistent playoff team, was perhaps the biggest so far. Legacy out-hit Waxahachie 12-4 in a 5-1 win. Branden Bohuslav picked up his first win at the varsity level and Legacy hit five doubles to pick up the victory.

Mansfield High girls soccer on verge of district title

The Mansfield Lady Tigers need just one more win to capture a District 7-5A title. Mansfield won last week against Grand Prairie 1-0 to put itself in the position to capture the crown this week.

After a brief two-game losing streak, Mansfield has roared back with back to back wins against Duncanville and Grand Prairie.

Sidney LeRoy has led Mansfield in goals with 15, while Kelbie Gehm leads the team with 11 assists.
