In most athletic contests, a tie is less than satisfying. But that’s not the case for the Keller boys soccer team.
If all else holds true in the final two regular season games in District 4-5A soccer, a 1-1 tie with Central back on Feb. 1 will give Keller the edge for the second seed heading into the playoffs.Keller won its other contest against Central, 2-0.But the games are still on the schedule to be played, and Keller’s finale against Richland on Friday is no gimmee.Carroll leads the district, with Central and Keller locked in second place and Richland just a point behind.Tuesday’s games had Keller taking on Timber Creek and Central playing Haltom.Central finishes up against Northwest on Friday.Oddly enough, Central sports fewer losses than Keller.Central’s 7-1-4 record headed into their Tuesday game looks to be stronger than Keller’s 8-3-1.But the point system in soccer evens out those two records, giving 3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie.Richland could be the tricky game for Keller, even though the Indians posted a 3-0 win over the Rebels in the initial contest.Richland and Central own the only wins over Carroll this season, with Timber Creek putting one of the ties on the Dragons and Central owning the other tie against Carroll.Central’s win and tie against Carroll would give the Chargers any tiebreaker advantage.Central head coach Dave Maher has said he likes the way this year’s team has pulled together. Much of that drive may be to prevent a similar outcome of last season when the Chargers failed to make the post season for the first time in the program’s history.A 1-0 loss to Carroll the Monday of spring break put the Indians in the position of having to win out to save the second seed.Central picked up a 3-1 win over Fossil Ridge on Monday to give them enough points for the second place tie.Richland will take the final playoff spot in the district, but they were 14 points back and unable to catch either Central or Keller.Fossil Ridge was playing Carroll on Tuesday, and had lost the first contest to the Dragons by just a 2-1 score.Either a Fossil Ridge or Haltom win over Carroll could again throw the district’s top three into turmoil, should the Dragons be looking ahead to the playoffs.Timber Creek and Fossil Ridge will conclude the regular season against each other on Friday.Have more to add?
