The Keller track and field teams have been setting a pace which has first-year head coach Billy Overshown feeling optimistic.

Keller has hit the mid-season point and has just three more meets before competing at the district meet.

Along the way, Keller started off with a fourth-place finish at the Mansfield Tiger Invitational, then earned a second-place finish at the Grapevine Relays.

The Indians then captured first place at Decatur’s Eagle Relays. Keller’s JV team took second place in the sub-varsity division.

The Lady Indians finished in a tie for second as a team at Decatur. The JV squad took first place honors for the Keller girls.

Standing out for Keller has been pole vaulter Gabe McAdams.

McAdams has picked up either first or second place finishes in his meets thus far. He hit 15’ in the Decatur meet.

Overshown also noted the strong performance of some of his distance runners.

“Austen Dalquist and John McConnell have been running very well in both the 1-mile and 2-mile,” Overshown said.

“And, we also have Derrick Gutierrez doing well in the 800m.”

Dalquist won both distance events at Decatur, with McConnell finishing behind in second place in the 1-mile.

Gutierrez and McConnell finished 1-2 in the 800m at Decatur, with Gutierrez also taking second in the 400m.

In other field events, Keller is led by Luke Young. He took first in the discus and second in the shot at the Eagle Relays.

On the girls side, Lindsey Simpson has been strong in the 400m, taking the gold at Decatur.

Alex Adams has had good performances in the shot put for the Lady Indians, helping garner team points for Keller, as well as Kate Mason in the high jump.

McAdams isn’t the only pole vaulter at Keller bringing home medals.

For the Lady Indians, a trio of vaulters have been placing high at meets, including Alyssa Western, Amanda Wetzel and Leanna Ochoa.

“Our numbers are good, which has helped our depth,” Overshown said of the turnout for the program. “We have about 60 kids in both JV and varsity this year. “As we get closer to the district meet, we’ll start having to find our top three in each event,” Overshown said.

Keller will run at Fossil Ridge this week before prepping for their own meet on March 28.

Keller will also be the host for the district meet on April 10-11.
