The UT Arlington Mavericks used an early offensive display and outstanding relief pitching from Chase Weaver to avoid a three-game sweep and beat the McNeese State Cowboys 6-5 on Sunday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark. After a wild first two innings, in which every one of the game’s 11 runs were scored with two outs, Weaver slammed the door over the next 6 2/3 innings.“It was a big win for us,” UTA coach Darin Thomas said. “It really was the Chase Weaver show. You can’t do any better than he did it today.”Mavs starter John Beck allowed three runs in the first on four singles, the last of which plated a pair.McNeese took a 5-3 lead in the top of the second, but the Mavs took the lead for good in the bottom of the frame, getting three runs to take a 6-5 lead.Derek Miller, who was 3 for 4, led off with a single, and after moving up to second on a Ryan Walker base hit, scored after two wild pitches. J.M. Twichell followed with a single through the left side to score Walker. Darien McLemore, the next hitter, then ripped a two-out double into the gap in right-center to score Twichell from first.Weaver came in to start the third and sat the Cowboys down 1-2-3 to restore order. It was a sign of things to come, as the lefty was masterful all afternoon, holding McNeese scoreless on just two hits over 6 2/3 innings. He did not walk a batter.Weaver was relieved by Chad Nack after allowing a two-out single in the ninth. After allowing a ground ball single, Nack stranded runners on the corners on a soft grounder to short.McLemore finished with three hits and a career-best three RBIs. Walker and Justin Copeland each went 2 for 5. The Mavs had 13 hits, but stranded 11 runners.UT Arlington plays Tuesday night at 7 against TCU at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.
