Drilling in the Barnett Shale slowed this week as the number of active rigs in the field dropped to 28, down from 32 the past two weeks.

Wise County lost two rigs but is still the busiest, with seven active rigs, followed by Montague County with five and Tarrant and Denton counties with four each, according to RigData.

Devon Energy continues to be the leader with seven rigs, followed by EOG Resources with three.

Nationwide, rigs seeking gas jumped by 24, the most in more than three years, to 431, pushing the overall rig count to 1,776, Baker Hughes said.

Oil rigs were unchanged at 1,341. Natural gas prices are at a 16-week high and are approaching $4 per 1,000 cubic feet, a level last seen in September 2011.
