Hernandez commented that although George P. Bush "is biologically half Mexican-American, his last name cancels any commonality." Really? This would surprise my business associates in Mexico whose families have deep roots in Mexico yet carry the family names of Maginnis (Irish) and Riguer (French).

Would Obama lose all commonality with African-Americans if his last name were Wordsworth or, perhaps, Piazza? Such statements as Hernandez's demonstrate just how silly and prejudiced identity politics really is.
