TCU took two second places on the first day of the TCU Invitational on Thursday.

Freshman Makena Schroder set a school record while finishing second in the javelin with a throw of 148-9.

Megan Smith finished second in the women’s discus with a 158-2.

• Men’s tennis: TCU won at Arizona 4-1 to run its record to 10-4. The Horned Frogs have won three straight and five out of their past six.

UTA roundup

•  Softball: UT Arlington split two games at the San Diego Classic II, beating Southern Utah 1-0 and falling to Miami 4-3.

Teri Lyles pitched a four-hit shutout in the opener, walking two and striking out four.

The Mavericks (13-9) scored the only run in the fifth on an infield single by Jolene Schaefer, a bunt single by Kallan Thompson and a forceout by Britnea Barilli.

The Hurricanes scored an unearned run in the ninth inning in the second game.

Lyles had three hits and two RBIs for the Mavericks.

Wesleyan falls

Jake Howeth had three hits and two RBIs, but visiting Texas Wesleyan fell to Northwood 10-5 in Red River Athletic Conference baseball.

The Rams fell to 19-10 for the season and 6-4 in league play. Northwood is 19-6 and 9-1.

New NCAA enforcer

Jonathan Duncan has 18 months to prove he can run the NCAA’s enforcement department effectively, efficiently and within the rules.

Then President Mark Emmert will decide whether the new interim top cop should stick around permanently.

After three full days in his new job, Duncan told The Associated Press he’s been told he’ll have a year and a half to restore the public image of an enforcement division reeling from the embarrassment of a botched investigation at Miami.

“I think we can get a lot done in that time,” Duncan said as he confirmed the 18-month time frame.

He takes over from Julie Roe Lach, the first female enforcement chief who was a popular figure within NCAA headquarters.

She was forced out March 1, less than two weeks after the governing body released a report showing the NCAA paid Nevin Shapiro’s attorney to collect evidence in the Miami case despite objections from the NCAA’s legal department, and in violation of the NCAA’s own rules.
