Dear Editor:

First, I want to commend our Aledo ISD girls basketball team for making it to state this year. Congratulations to Mallory Powell for being named the MVP of the Regional Tournament and Justis Szcyepankski-Beavers, also named to the All-Tournament team. Our whole community is very proud of all of you.

Secondly, I would like to correct statements made in all of the local newspapers. Each paper stated that this was " the first trip to state in the history of the school." That is not a true statement. The class of ’44-45 girls basketball team was one of the most successful in the history of the school. They won second consolation at the state tournament in Hillsboro. This statement was taken from the 1945 annual. The girls also went to state in the years 1948-49, 1950-51 and 1952-53. In 1951, they won the Sportsmanship trophy. Members of that team included Joe Alice Head Wickizer, Leta Johnson Eastman and Lulu Johnson Kirk. Willis Apple, the school superintendent, was also the girls basketball coach. Leta says at halftime, he would give the girl's Hershey’s bar and a Coke to give them a boost for the second half. I guess it must have worked.

Again - congratulations to the girls basketball team of 2011-12. You were great!
