FORT WORTH -- James Ronald Davis was in the last hour of his overnight shift at a southwest Fort Worth convenience store on Sept. 20, 1995, when a man walked in and shot him in the chest.
Davis didn't go down without a fight.Davis, 47, chased his assailant around the counter and struggled with him near the store's front door, where he was shot again. After getting to a phone to call 911, Davis staggered back to the front of the store at 5617 McCart Ave., where he collapsed through a glass window. Davis was pronounced dead at 7 a.m. after arriving at John Peter Smith Hospital.More than 17 years later, Davis' killer has not been caught, and police are hoping that a video clip from the store's security camera might bring new leads."We are still working this case and hoping to bring the [gunman] to justice and closure to the family," said Cpl. Tracey Knight, a police spokeswoman. The video clip, which was released Tuesday, shows Davis working behind the counter when the gunman, wearing a baseball hat and what appears to be a dark jacket and jeans, walks in about 6:15 a.m.Seconds later, the gunman falls backward back into camera view, apparently during a struggle with Davis. The gunman raises his right hand and shoots Davis before running out the door, the video shows. At the time, police said it appeared that robbery was the gunman's motive although they didn't know if he got away with anything.A witness told police that the gunman ran east on Edgecliff Road, according to a police report. The suspect is described as a black male, approximately 5-foot-9-inches and 160 pounds with brown hair and a mustache. He had red watery eyes, a skinny narrow face, and was wearing a Dallas Cowboys baseball cap and jacket with a white T-shirt and blue pants. The man fled in what was described as a dark green, 1992-1994 Ford Taurus with possibly four doors. Anyone with information about the gunman is asked to call 817-335-4222.This report includes material from the Star-Telegram archives.Deanna Boyd, 817-390-7655Twitter: @deannaboydHave more to add?
