Josh Hernandez made plenty of people happy with his basketball skills as a member of the Byron Nelson High School team.

His life ended in an automobile accident last April on the way home from the 4A girls state championship soccer game in Georgetown, where he was watching his friends on the Nelson girls team.

But the Town of Trophy Club is maintaining his memory with the Live Like Josh First Annual 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament March 16 on the outdoor courts at Independence Park West.

The event is being billed as a day to remember Josh and his love of basketball. It will also help better the future of some other Byron Nelson student as the proceeds will be donated to the Live Like Josh scholarship fund to provide a scholarship for college tuition.

“The 3-on-3 basketball tournament allows the Trophy Club community to remember Josh in a way that is special for Josh and his love of basketball,” said April Reiling, Trophy Club public information officer/marketing manager.

“The town recently upgraded the basketball courts by installing professional, tournament-caliber backboards designed for enhanced play. The basketball court at Independence Park West is ready for some 3-on-3!”

The tournament features open registration in a variety of divisions and is single-elimination. Play is from 8 a.m.-7 p.m., and limited slots are available.

Winners in each division will receive a Live Like Josh championship trophy.

Cost to enter is $60 per team. All participants will receive a Live Like Josh T-shirt with their registration, and they will also be available for sale to the public for $10 on site and prior to the tournament.

Money made from T-shirt sales also goes to the scholarship fund.

The day will include a special ceremony at noon to honor Josh. It will feature the unveiling of a bench dedicated to him with his name and number (22). There will also be some guest speakers, including Trophy Club Mayor Connie White.

“Josh was a well-loved student-athlete at Byron Nelson, and I think it’s wonderful that his friends are choosing to remember him this way,” White said. “I am really happy that the town is able to support such a meaningful event.”

Online registration continues through Tuesday, March 12 at www.leaguelineup.com/live_like_josh. Questions can be addressed to the Trophy Club Parks and Recreation Department at slewis@trophyclub.org.
