Oklahoma State guard Marcus Smart was voted the Big 12’s best player and top freshman by the league’s coaches.

Smart joins Texas’ Kevin Durant (2007) and Kansas State’s Michael Beasley (2008) as the only dual honorees.

Kansas State’s Bruce Weber was picked as the Big 12’s top coach.

Joining Smart on the All-Big 12 first team are Kansas senior center Jeff Withey, Jayhawks freshman guard Ben McLemore, Kansas State guard Rodney McGruder and Oklahoma forward Romero Osby.

UTA softball rolls

The UT Arlington softball team won two games by a combined score of 20-4 on the final day of the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic in Lubbock on Sunday.

The Mavericks (11-8) beat Indiana-Purdue at Fort Wayne 11-3 in the opener and Missouri-Kansas City 9-1 in the second game.

Both games lasted only five innings.

In their victory over IPFW, the Mavericks scored seven runs in the fourth inning to win by the run rule.

Jolene Schaefer and Rebecca Stokes each had two hits and two RBI.

IPFW also committed five errors.

The Mavericks scored four runs in the second inning and three in the fifth in beating UMKC.

Taylor Zink and Kallan Thompson each had three hits. Zink had two RBIs.

Teri Lyles was the winning pitcher in both games and had three RBIs in the second one. She gave up only three hits to UMKC.
