HOUSTON — Colleyville Covenant came away with a split in Saturday’s TAPPS Division III championship soccer games played at Awty International School.
The Covenant boys scored four times in the second half to beat Houston Cypress Christian 4-0. Meanwhile, the Cougars girls fell 3-0 to Bullard Brook Hill.
The Covenant boys had the benefit of a strong wind at their backs in the first half, but they were unable to take advantage as Cypress Christian chose to play defense.
Feeling the breeze in its face appeared to rejuvenate Covenant as the second half opened.
Jacob Garcia scored in the 49th minute off a crossing pass from Jon Mills.
Brooks Friedman made it 2-0 five minutes later with a goal off a long run.
Friedman picked up his second score in the 62nd minute. Mills picked up his second assist on the play.
Vincente Juarez completed the Covenant scoring after taking a pass from Caleb O’Dell in the 65th minute.
The Cougars’ defense did an outstanding job shutting down Cypress midfielder Tijani Mohammed, who had scored four goals in the Warriors’ semifinal win over Kerrville Our Lady of the Hills.
The Covenant girls were unable to penetrate Brook Hill’s defensive back line, which was led by center backs Kirby Vinson and Ari Assad.
Morgan Moss and Katherine Stair scored in the first half for Brook Hill. Kendall Wells added a third goal in the second half.
Covenant had its best scoring opportunity in the 54th minute when Adrianna Arce fed a pass to Anna Lamar, whose shot hit the near post and bounded out of bounds.
Arce and Shania Douglas combined for several good passes, but the Cougars were unable to get one in the net.
