Senior point guard Kris Anderson made a 4-foot floater in the lane with 2.6 seconds left to give White Oak a 56-54 win Saturday at the Erwin Center, securing the Roughnecks' second straight UIL Class 2A state championship at the expense of Brock.

“When Coach called spread I just new I could get to the hole, and I was just going to take what the defense gave me,” said Anderson, who finished with 12 points and six assists in earning MVP honors. “If they had stepped up I would have dumped it. ”

White Oak (37-1) defeated Brock (32-7) in last year’s 2A final 61-53. It’s the Roughnecks’ fourth boys basketball state title, including 1953 and ’57. The Brock girls won their fifth consecutive 2A title last week.

Brock tied the game 54-54 with 59 seconds remaining on Luke Hummels’ sixth 3-pointer of the game.

After a Roughnecks’ timeout, Anderson dribbled the clock down to 8 seconds before making his move toward the hoop. Once he reached the top of the circle, he crossed over a defender and found himself all alone as Brock’s forwards chose to stick with their own men, before floating the ball through the net.

After the teams exchanged timeouts, Brock’s inbounds pass was stolen by the Roughnecks, who dribbled out the clock.

“Basically we wanted to make sure we got the last shot. Worst-case scenario: we shoot, miss and play a little more,” White Oak coach Ron Boyett said. “I felt pretty good that if we got it down to 8 seconds, spread everybody out and gave Kris the ball that it was going to happen for us.”

Senior guard Skylar Sutton made four 3-pointers to lead White Oak to a 31-22 advantage at halftime. Brock, as it did Friday in the semifinals, opened the third quarter with a flurry, needing less than four minutes to erase the deficit.

The Eagles took their first lead since the opening minute of the game on Tre Ewell’s 3-pointer with just under 3 minutes remaining in the game, before White Oak answered with a 4-0 run.

Sutton finished with a team-high 14 points for the Roughnecks. His brother Slade added 12, including three second-half 3-pointers.

Brock lost despite making half their 3-pointers (10 of 20). Hummels led all scorers with 18 points. Tre Ewell and his younger brother Lance finished with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

“These guys will always be No. 1 in my heart, and I couldn’t be more proud of them,” Brock coach Jeff Bell said. “I told them we’d be there in the end if we kept fighting and we did. The kid [Anderson] made a great shot, so it’s a credit to them.”
