Nolan Catholic, Grapevine Faith, Covenant teams reach state soccer finals

A

The Nolan Catholic boys team scored twice in the second half to secure a 2-0 win over San Antonio Antonian in Friday’s TAPPS Division I state soccer semifinal game at Awty International School.

Nolan (15-4-1) advances to the championship game at 6 p.m. Saturday against Dallas Bishop Lynch, which defeated San Antonio Central Catholic 3-2. The Vikings will be seeking their third consecutive state title.

Anthony Cuccarese put in the first Nolan goal off a corner kick by Grant Muehlstein in the 57th minute.

Keagan Angevin took a pass from Barton Holdridge in front of the goal to record the second Vikings score in the 70th minute.

Nolan coach Adam Clementson was relieved to watch his team convert twice after a tough first half that saw the Vikings create a lot of chances but come up empty.

“We looked sluggish at the start,” Clementson said. “The first half was a little bit disappointing. The second half, after we got the [first] goal, we started to step it up again.”

Antonian was able to move the ball into its attacking third of the field, but rarely got a good shot off because of outstanding play by the Nolan back line of Edwin Sweeney, Nathan Roberts, Zachary Kitowski and Cuccarese.

“The back four played superb,” Clementson said. “They looked very strong and I was very proud of them.”

Boys Division II

Grapevine Faith’s Mason McManus scored with two minutes left in the second overtime to defeat Dallas Bishop Lynch 1-0 in a semifinal at Houston St. Thomas.

Faith advances to the championship game at 3 p.m. Saturday against Houston Awty, which was a 5-1 winner against Pharr Oratory.

“It was kind of a frustrating game and I didn’t want it to go penalty kicks,” Faith coach Matt McKinney said.

Girls Division II

Fort Worth Southwest Christian girls dropped an 8-0 decision to Dallas Parish Episcopal in the girls Division II semifinals.

Division III

Colleyville Covenant’s boys and girls teams secured semifinal wins Friday.

Adrianna Arce scored off a pass from Anna Lamar to lead the Covenant girls to a 1-0 win over Austin Veritas.

Daisy Rodgers controlled the middle of the field to help Covenant keep Veritas off the scoreboard.

Brooks Friedman scored twice and Jacob Garcia and Matt Schwebke each had one as the Covenant boys defeated Houston St. Thomas Episcopal 4-0.

Jon Hudson and Elliott Wendell led the defensive effort for Covenant.

Both Division III championship games will be at Awty International on Saturday.

The Covenant girls play Bullard Brook Hill at 9 a.m., followed by the boys game against Houston Cypress Christian at noon.
