After digging out from a 16-point first-half deficit, the North Texas women’s basketball season ended in heart-breaking fashion, an 80-74 double-overtime loss to Louisiana-Lafayette in Friday’s opening round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.

Freshman Alexis Hyder had a season-high 25 points to lead the Mean Green (11-19), while freshman Loryn Goodwin had 14 points and 10 boards, and senior Sara Stanley closed her UNT career with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

But Lafayette (10-20) bounced back from a 3-17 mark in conference play by getting double-figure scoring from five of its seven players who saw action. Keke Veal led the parade with 17 points and nine rebounds while Sylvana Okde nailed five 3-pointers on the way to 16 points.

North Texas opened a four-point lead in both overtime periods, but critical turnovers opened the door for Louisiana-Lafayette.

In the second overtime, UNT took a 70-66 lead, but Hyder fouled out. The Cajuns drew even at the free-throw line, and Veal hit a 3-pointer for a 73-70 lead with 1:38 left. Lafayette was 4-of-4 from the line in the final minute.
