A Grand Prairie man was in custody at a Dallas hospital Thursday after he led police on a brief chase that exceeded 100 mph before he drove his car into a guardrail at Joe Pool Lake, Grand Prairie police said.

Police identified the man as Andre Palmer, 41. He was being treated at Methodist Dallas Medical Center.

The car exploded on impact and was left in pieces, but the driver exited and hid from police for more than hour before a Grand Prairie resident alerted authorities about a suspicious man in a neighborhood. When officers arrived, they determined that the man was the driver.

The chase began shortly before 3:30 a.m. when an officer tried to stop the suspect on a traffic violation.
