Boys basketball

The Seguin boys basketball team came just-this-close to a trip to the state championship game last weekend.

Unfortunately, Dallas Kimball was able to score two more points, edging the Cougars 54-52 on Saturday in the Class 4A regional final.

Seguin, which garnered enough national attention this season to be featured on ESPNU in December, struggled to hit shots in the fourth quarter, in which the Knights outscored the Cougars 14-7.

Nicko Boleware led the Seguin scoring with 14, followed by Greg Wesley with 13 and Brandon Parrish, the scoring leader for the season, with 11. Parrish had 441 for the season, averaging nearly 15 points per game.

Just one day before the regional final, Seguin found itself fighting for its playoff life against West Mesquite but rode a strong fourth quarter to a 70-59 victory. Parrish had 21 points against the Wranglers.

“It was a very tough game,” Seguin coach Bobby Thigpen told the Star-Telegram after the West Mesquite matchup. “This is the third time we’ve played them this year, so they kind of know us and we kind of know them. They played really hard and they played with a lot more intensity in the first three quarters than we did, I think. But we finally woke up and got going.”

The senior-laden team ended the 2012-13 season at 30-5. Among those 30 victories was a 71-63 victory over Kimball in December.

The Martin boys basketball team made it to the Class 5A regional semifinal Friday but couldn't overcome South Grand Prairie, losing 56-28.

The Warriors were coming off a thrilling double-overtime victory Feb. 26 against El Paso Bel Air, in which Patrick Burke and Andrew Dotson led the scoring with 13 each on the way to the 68-66 final.

The Warriors had trouble mustering that kind of firepower against South Grand Prairie. Kordell Eilts led Martin with eight points, Nick Babb contributed six and Dotson was limited to four.

Martin finished its season 28-7, having won 10 straight before Friday's loss.
