Michael Thompson had one of only five rounds under par Sunday to win his first PGA Tour event at the Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Thompson seized control with a 50-foot eagle putt on the third hole. He stayed in control with superb par saves early on the back nine at PGA National. He made birdie from the bunker on the last hole for a 1-under 69 for a 9-under 271 total and a two-shot victory over Geoff Ogilvy.

The 27-year-old Thompson already is in the Masters from being a runner-up at the U.S. Open.

Ogilvy birdied two of his last three holes for a 69 to finish second, which moves him into the top 50 and gets him into the World Golf Championship next week at Doral.

Tiger Woods closed with a 74 and was tied for 37th, 13 shots back.

Luke Guthrie, tied with Thompson for the 54-hole lead, fell behind with a bogey on the second hole and closed with a 73 to finish third.

Briefly

•  European Tour: Dawie Van Der Walt became the fifth South African winner in 10 European Tour events this season with his two-shot victory at the Tshwane Open in Centurion, South Africa. Van Der Walt shot 5-under 67 for his first win on the tour. The Kingwood resident, a former Lamar University standout, is ranked 436th in the world.

•  LPGA Tour: Stacy Lewis won the HSBC Women’s Champions in Singapore for her sixth career title on the tour. She closed with a 1-under 71, overcoming some shaky putting on the back nine to hold off South Korea’s Na Yeon Choi by one stroke. Lewis finished at 15-under 273. Paula Creamer, hampered by a shoulder injury from a car accident in Thailand, held a share of the lead early in the day but faded to a 71 to finish third.

•  Web.com Tour : Rookie Patrick Cantlay fired a 5-under 66 and pulled away from fellow third-round co-leader Jim Renner to win the Colombia Championship in Bogota by four strokes. At 20, Cantlay is the second-youngest winner in Web.com history.
