UT Arlington shot just 29.4 percent from the field and fell hard to San Jose State 71-49 Thursday night in a Western Athletic Conference game.

The Spartans (10-16, 7-8 WAC) shot 44.4 shooting percent from the field in handling the Mavericks, who fell to 6-20 and 3-12 in the WAC.

UTA was coming off a seven-day layoff after defeating New Orleans 82-57 on Feb. 20.

Freshman guard Jordan Holub led the Mavericks with 13 points, and senior guard Kiara Parker had 10 rebounds and three steals for UT Arlington

The Spartans led for the majority of the first half, but the Mavericks battled back and Rosalyn Thorpe tied the game at 17 with a jump shot in the paint.

San Jose State went on a 13-2 run to go into the halftime break with a 30-21 lead.

UTA shot 7 for 29 (.241) from the floor in the first half while San Jose State shot 34 percent and outrebounded the Mavs 29-19.

The Spartans began the second half with a 16-4 run before junior guard Malaika Green hit the Mavericks’ first 3-pointer of the game. Green was the first Mavericks player in double figures after a jump shot to give her 10 points.

Holub was the only other Mavericks player to reach double figures.

San Jose State’s Ta’Rea Cunnigan was 4 of 7 from 3-point range and 10 of 19 shooting overall in scoring 28 points to lead both teams.

The Mavericks return to the court at 6 p.m. Saturday to face Utah State in Logan, Utah, in their final road trip of the WAC season.
