Advocating for people with disabilities

Do you know someone who is improving the lives of people with disabilities? Perhaps you are thinking of a person who inspires others to a common vision of enriching the lives of people with disabilities or one who has brought about changes to help the disabled.

To publicly recognize an individual who fits this description, consider nominating him or her for the Sam Provence Award to be presented at the May 10 Hand in Hand luncheon benefiting local nonprofit organization Helping Restore Ability.

HRA President Vicki Niedermayer has announced that nominations are open for the award, which honors an individual who works diligently to advocate, enrich, and/or enable the lives of people with disabilities in a substantial or unique way.

The award, established last year, is named in honor of HRA’s founder. Arlington resident and longtime supporter of people with disabilities Lawrence Odom. received the inaugural award.

Get information on award criteria and the nomination form at www.HelpingRestoreAbility.org. The deadline for submission is April 19. Send to jwatelski@hratexas.org.

Contact Niedermayer at 817-469-1977 with questions.

Encore Club

Members of Encore Club, established in 1975, met recently at Cacharel Restaurant to hear an update on all things Arlington from Mayor Robert Cluck.

Program chairwoman Jean Widmann arranged for the mayor to join the group for a luncheon and present information about current city projects and neighborhood initiatives to expect in the coming year. Encore president is Nancy York.

Contact publicity chairwoman Jo Davis at 817-795-9577 with questions about the organization.

Power of words

French poet Jean Cocteau said, “ The greatest masterpiece in literature is only a dictionary out of order.

Members of the Republican Women of Arlington club evidently agree with this quote because they’ve been providing dictionaries to Arlington students through their literacy program for the past 45 years.

President of the 156-member club is Rhonda Lewis who, along with program chairwoman Ann Morris and members Delores Hammond and Elaine Norcross, recently presented dictionaries to each fifth-grade student at West, Fitzgerald, Knox and Berry elementary schools.

“The Republican Women of Arlington strongly believe that education is a key factor in the success and future of our country, and the literacy program is designed to help our students excel in their studies. In many instances these books are the first book some of the students have ever had,” said Morris.

Anyone interested in joining the club is invited to attend meetings, held on the third Thursday each month at Shady Valley Country Club from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. To inquire, contact membership chairwoman Mary Tom Curnutt at mtcurnutt@tx.rr.com.
