The Mansfield schools all enjoyed success at the state swim meet in Austin this weekend.

For Legacy, the Broncos had a first-time medalist while both Mansfield and Lake Ridge had high finishes for the meet.

Legacy senior Sarah Musselman finished third in the one meter diving, taking home the bronze medal. It was the first medal for Musselman in her fourth state meet and the first medal for swimming and diving at the state meet in Legacy history.

“She was very excited,” Legacy and Lake Ridge coach Tony Tullbane said. “That was the first Legacy swimmer or diver to be on podium at the state meet. To finally get one on podium was a great feeling.”

Cory Loria was the highest finisher for Mansfield with a fourth-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle and a fifth place finish in the 200-yard freestyle.

At the regional meet two weeks ago, Loria set three school records in the 100, 200 and 500 freestyle to advance to the state meet.

Meagan Thompson finished 8th in the girls 50-yard freestyle and 11th in the 100-yard freestyle. She was also apart of the 200 and 400-yard freestyle relay teams that finished 11th and 12th respectively.

Thompson also set school records at the regional meet in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle.

Mansfield coach Matt Bold couldn’t think of a better way for those two swimmers to finish their high school careers.

“I think it was fantastic,” he said. “To qualify for state and do that culminates a great run.”

Also for Mansfield, Ryan Tipton finished seventh in one-meter diving.

From Legacy, Madison Yelle finished sixth in the 200-yard freestyle and 12th in the 500-yard freestyle. Sam Spoonermore finished 14th in the 50-yard freestyle.

Kirsten Brown finished 14th in the 100-yard backstroke for Lake Ridge. Also for Lake Ridge, Parker Sheppard finished 15th in the 100 butterfly.

“It was a good swim and it was a big stage,” Tullbane said. “The good part is we had some underclassman experience it. You’re facing 15 other kids that are the fastest in the entire state. It’s fast paced, it comes at you in a hurry. They did great.”

Bold said he was proud of how his athletes handled the big stage. He said it helped that Mansfield has been in plenty of big meets before state so the pressure wasn’t as high.

“Yeah, I think we do a good job because we go to several meets with fast competitors,” he said. “Our region is one of fastest in the state.”
