There isn’t much anyone could say about the TCU women’s basketball team’s 66-56 loss to West Virginia on Saturday at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.

TCU coach Jeff Mittie summed it up in just over a handful of words.

“Yeah, we turned it over way too much,” he said.

The Horned Frogs (8-18, 1-14 in Big 12) had 20 turnovers.

“We weren’t finishing the plays at the end of the pass and we weren’t passing the ball effectively for most of the game,” Mittie said. “It really boiled down to that 10-minute stretch in the middle where we turned it over and they picked us up full court, we turned it over and we missed layups.”

TCU remained in the game through the 15-minute mark of the second half, but would be held without a field goal for just over 11 straight minutes of the final half. During that time, West Virginia’s Bria Holmes came off the bench to score eight points in an eight-minute span. The effort helped West Virginia’s bench outscore TCU’s 20-8.

After trailing by as many as 14 with just under seven minutes to play, TCU mounted a small comeback, scoring seven points in 50 seconds, which brought the Horned Frogs within eight with just over two minutes to play.

Sophomore guard Natalie Ventress not only sparked the offense with a game-high, 21-point night, but was a catalyst for the Horned Frogs’ brief rally.

“We’re a young team, so the freshmen were kind of putting their head down and I was telling them to keep shooting the ball and it would eventually go in,” Ventress said.

Three Mountaineers finished in double figures in scoring, led by junior guard Taylor Palmer with 19.

TCU center Latricia Lovings came away with another quality game in the shot-blocking department, swatting seven West Virginia attempts. Lovings’ career high for a game is nine.

In the end, it was West Virginia (16-10, 8-7 in Big 12) that survived the sloppy affair, which Mountaineers coach Mike Carey was more than happy to take and escape Fort Worth with the victory.

“[TCU is] young at every position and they play hard and are extremely well coached,” Carey said. “We feel very fortunate to get out of here with a win.”
