The Tarleton State Texans face their most important test of the season at 7 p.m. Saturday when they host first-place Midwestern State at Wisdom Gym.

The Texans are 15-8 overall and ranked No. 9 in the NCAA Division II’s South Central region, but their 8-7 Lone Star Conference record is good for just fourth in the conference. Trying to bounce back from a 53-51 loss at Cameron on Wednesday, the Texans sit just one game ahead of a three-team pack when it comes to seeding for the conference tournament.

“I’ve never seen parity like there is right now in the conference,” Tarleton State coach Lonn Reisman said. “The conference is so close. Everyone has been able to beat everyone.”

Sitting just behind the Texans are Texas A&M-Commerce, Texas A&M-Kingsville and Eastern New Mexico, all with a 7-8 conference record. The key for Tarleton State is success on the boards. The Texans were outrebounded 42-21 in their loss to Cameron.

“The bottom line is that if they do not improve, then our season will come to a close sooner than we’d like,” Resiman said. “If they can rebound, then we are going to have a chance.”

Midwestern State outrebounded A&M-Commerce 49-23 on Wednesday night, including 31 offensive rebounds, in a 85-67 win.

Wesleyan ends year

Texas Wesleyan’s basketball teams close out their campaigns Saturday with home games on senior day.

Facing the University of the Southwest, the teams enter the matchups facing different situations when it comes to postseason play. The women have already clinched the fourth seed of the Red River Athletic Conference tournament, but the men are in a must-win game. They have won four of their past five games.

The TWU women open the doubleheader at 2 p.m. The men play at 4 p.m.
