FORT WORTH -- A 24-year-old man has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for fatally shooting his former girlfriend's mother outside their Arlington apartment in 2011.
Luis Alfredo Perez pleaded guilty to a murder charge in October and was sentenced Tuesday by state District Judge Louis Sturns, according to a news release from the Tarrant County district attorney's office. Perez must serve 25 years before he is eligible for parole.According to prosecutors, Perez shot Maria Ramirez on July 3, 2011, outside the Arlington apartment where she lived with her daughter, Perez's ex-girlfriend, and their two children.The ex-girlfriend had obtained a protective order against Perez that was supposed to keep him at a distance from the family. But he showed up at the apartment, asking to see the children. Ramirez stepped outside to talk with him. Her daughter and the children stayed inside, but at one point, the daughter opened the door and told him to go away. Perez pulled a gun from his waistband.
