The UT Arlington women’s basketball team overcame an early deficit Wednesday against New Orleans and had its best game of the season, using two scoring runs for an 82-57 victory at College Park Center.

New Orleans had jumped to a 12-4 lead before the Mavericks went on a 17-2 run to take a 21-14 lead. Junior guard Desherra Nwanguma and freshman guard Jordan Holub combined for 12 points during that run.

Then the Mavericks went on 13-4 run to take a 34-21 lead into halftime.

“We just continued to press forward and finally they stayed with it and put the ball in the hole,” UTA interim coach Karen Blair said.

To start the second half, the Mavericks (6-19) put the Privateers (3-20) away for good by going on a 13-4 run to go up 47-25 with 15:55 remaining.

With the score at 59-39, the Mavericks scored on six straight possessions to take a 72-39 lead with 7:06 remaining.

The Mavericks shot a season-high 51 percent and had a season-low 12 turnovers.

The game started at noon, and 1,275 elementary children from the Arlington school district attended the game.

“I told the team before the game that ‘I don’t know if you want to be a rock star but today is your chance to be Justin Bieber, because you’re going to walk out there and there’s going to be a thousand of screaming fans,’ ” Blair said. “I thought they did a good job of embracing it and it gave them a lot of energy.”
