FW Trimble Tech boys open basketball playoffs in style

Chasten King, nicknamed Mr. Big Shot by the Fort Worth Trimble Tech fans, stayed true to his moniker on Tuesday night, hitting three 3-pointers en route to a game-high 19 points to lead the Bulldogs to a 56-36 win over Waco High in a boys Class 4A bi-district playoff game.

“He has a lot of playoff experience and has made a lot of big shots for us,” Trimble Tech coach Wendell Ivory said of King. “He’s one of those kids that, as a coach, you hate to see graduate.”

Trimble Tech (24-7) had a huge second quarter, hitting five 3-pointers and outscoring Waco 24-11 to take a 13-point halftime lead.

Waco High (28-5) went on a 5-0 run to open the second half but, once again, King hit a big 3-pointer to halt the Lions momentum.

“I told my teammates they didn’t want to feel how we felt last year,” said King, referring to the Bulldogs’ stunning loss at the buzzer to Denton Ryan in last year’s regional semifinals. “I couldn’t believe [Waco] kept leaving me wide-open tonight but they did and I was able to hit the shots.”

Point guard Matt McGowan provided a spark late in the third, slashing through the lane for three baskets in as many possessions to get the Lions within six points. Trimble Tech finally answered, scoring a quick basket before the buzzer to lead 38-30 heading into the final quarter.

That was as close as Waco would get as the Bulldogs piled on 18 more points in the fourth quarter, seven of which came from King to seal the win.

Trimble Tech senior guard Jordan Gales scored 11 points including six from beyond the arc to complement King’s effort.

“The basketball season is a marathon, not a sprint,” Ivory said. “
