Services scheduled for Bryan firefighters
BRYAN -- Authorities say funeral services for one of two Central Texas firefighters killed in a weekend blaze will be held Friday.A service is scheduled for Bryan fire Lt. Gregory Pickard before his burial in adjacent College Station.Authorities had previously announced Thursday services for Bryan fire Lt. Eric Wallace.Pickard and Wallace died Saturday of injuries suffered fighting a blaze late Friday in an unoccupied Knights of Columbus Hall. Two other firefighters suffered burns.About 1,000 mourners attended a candlelight vigil for the men Sunday night at a high school football stadium in Bryan, about 90 miles northwest of Houston.City officials plan a formal public memorial service Wednesday at Central Baptist Church in College Station.Investigators say it could take several months to determine what caused the fire.-- The Associated PressGorilla baby will goto new zoo homeBROWNSVILLE -- A gorilla born last month at a South Texas zoo has been ignored by her mother so the animal will be sent to an Ohio zoo and introduced to a new troop.Officials with the Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville have been caring for the young animal being moved this week to the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden. Experts hope the western lowland gorilla born Jan. 29 will bond with two adult female gorillas at her new home.The mother was moved to the Gladys Porter Zoo in 2011 as part of an Association of Zoos and Aquariums species survival breeding plan. Police say the girl wasn't breathing when the relatives returned. The infant was transported to a hospital and died Friday night.Police believe White caused his daughter's injuries but did not say how she was hurt.Bond was set at $1 million for White, who was being held Monday in the Dallas County Jail. No information was immediately available on an attorney.- The Associated PressMan held in shooting at veterans' postHENDERSON -- Police say gunfire at an American Legion Post in East Texas has left one man dead and another charged with the slaying.Henderson police have declined to release the name of the 60-year-old suspect who's facing arraignment Tuesday on a murder charge.Investigators say a 53-year-old Henderson man was shot several times early Sunday while both men attended a function at the post. The victim died at a hospital. His name wasn't immediately released. An autopsy has been ordered.The suspect was arrested later Sunday in Henderson. Police have not released a possible motive for the attack.A spokesman for Henderson police did not immediately return a message Monday to provide additional details.Henderson is 120 miles southeast of Dallas.- The Associated PressHighway crew worker rescued after fallTEMPLE -- Emergency crews in Central Texas have rescued a highway worker from a 20-foot hole by extending a firetruck ladder to help ease him to safety.Temple Fire and Rescue spokesman Thomas Pechal says the worker suffered injuries not believed to be life-threatening in Monday's accident. He was transported to a Temple hospital. His name wasn't immediately released.Pechal says the worker was climbing down a ladder into the hole, which was reinforced with a corrugated pipe, when he slipped and fell to the bottom.Rescuers strapped the man to a gurney that was attached to a line connected to the firetruck ladder, which then lifted the victim from the hole.-- The Associated PressHave more to add?
