The Carroll boys basketball team clinched a playoff berth in its first season under coach Eric McDade, and the coach gives most of the credit to his senior leadership.

The Dragons defeated Keller Timber Creek 70-49 last Tuesday, but McDade said the victory did not come as easily as the results may have appeared.

“Timber Creek is definitely a well-coached team,” McDade said. “The impressive thing about them is that they are young, and they will have everybody back next year, so that will be a whole other issue in and of itself.

“They came out and gave us a run for our money, but our guys were so focused and into it. We rebounded and defended well, and we really got the pace where we wanted it to be.”

Daniel Brown led the team in scoring with 23 points, while Brett Jolly added 13 points in the game.

Hunter Summy, Sammy Silver, Spencer Tietjen, Thomas Gilliatt, Josh Zabransky, Levi Osburn and Cole Partyka combined for 34 points in the game.

Reflecting on the regular season, McDade said he is pleased with how things unfolded.

“I'm satisfied in the fact that the guys set a goal that we wanted to get to the third season, and we did that,” McDade said. “We had great chemistry and were able to grow our team into what it needed to be, and right now, we are playing our best basketball.”

The Dragons were set to play Arlington Martin on Tuesday night after the print deadline, but McDade said whether his team wins or loses against he Warriors, he wants his players to take away a couple of things from this season.

“Our guys have set some goals internally that they want to accomplish, and I just want to see our guys realize their goals,” McDade said. “I want them to have the opportunity to accomplish the things in life that they want to achieve, and this whole season has really been about the seniors.

“When you've got a new (coach) that comes in, it's all about the seniors and whether they are going to buy into what you are trying to do and what you need to get done. These guys have done that, and that is why this season's been special.”
