If there was any concern about replacing Preston Beck in the heart of UT Arlington’s lineup, J.M. Twitchell did everything he could to alleviate it this past weekend.

Twitchell went 5-for-11 with a double and two triples to power UTA’s season-opening sweep of Louisiana Tech. Tonight, he and UTA take their 3-0 record to Austin to face the Texas Longhorns at 6 p.m. Tuesday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

“He needs to be one of our guys that can drive runs in for us,” coach Darin Thomas said. “He had a really good weekend.”

The Longhorns are off to their usual strong start, taking two out of three against Sacramento State. Freshman C.J. Hinojosa had a great offensive weekend by hitting .545, but he also had three errors in as many games.

UTA is no stranger to UFCU Disch-Falk Field, having traveled there for all 71 games of the all-time series between the two programs. The Mavericks have only won 17 games against Texas, but they beat the Longhorns 7-5 last season.
