A teacher at Arlington's Boles Junior High School was suspended last month after she poured pencil shavings into the mouth of an eighth-grader who had fallen asleep during class.
The teacher was disciplined after the incident, according to the school district, which did not identify the teacher by name or race. The student was identified in television news reports as a black 13-year-old."This incident is unacceptable and was immediately and fully investigated by the AISD when it occurred almost a month ago," said a statement from the district released after the incident."The district took appropriate disciplinary action. The school has been in constant communication with the student's mother about this incident and other matters. At no time has mom expressed any concerns about the manner in which this situation was handled to the school or the district."However, Kyev Tatum, president of the Texas Southern Christian Leadership Conference in Fort Worth, hopes to meet with school officials this week, along with representatives of the NAACP and LULAC."This kind of treatment of black boys in schools must come to an end," Tatum said.Tatum said he believes the teacher should be fired."To allow this teacher to continue in the classroom is criminal," he said.Neither school nor district officials have heard any further from the student's mother, said Amy Casas, a district spokeswoman.Tatum said he had not spoken with the mother either.Shirley Jinkins, 817-390-7657Twitter: @startelegramHave more to add?
