Remember the no-no

Nick Tepesch got the first 22 outs May 19 in what would become the first nine-inning no-hitter in Myrtle Beach history, combining with Jimmy Reyes for the feat.

And there might not be a better place in the minors, outside of Las Vegas, to celebrate such an accomplishment.

"We were in Wilmington," Tepesch said, with the enthusiasm level one would expect when discussing the North Carolina town.

Tepesch finished 2012 at Double A Frisco and is in his first big-league camp this spring.

Is the fastball where everything begins for you? Oh, yeah. The fastball is obviously No. 1. You've got to be able to throw strikes and command your fastball.

What else is in your arsenal? I've got a cutter and curveball and changeup. The curveball or cutter, probably one of the two, is my out pitch.

How special was the no-hitter last year? It was pretty cool. A lot of credit needs to go to Jimmy Reyes, because he threw the last 12/3 innings. Those are probably the most nerve-racking innings of the game.

Knucklehead

Yu Darvish opened his bullpen session Sunday with a knuckleball, which had some in the Japanese media puzzled.

He later explained that he was just trying to impersonate a former Rangers No. 1 draft pick.

"I was going to start my season like R.A. Dickey last year," Darvish said. "But after I threw it, I gave up that idea."

Injury report

RHP Colby Lewis (flexor tendon surgery July 12): throwing out to 135 feet

RHP Roman Mendez (surgery for stress fracture in elbow Nov. 12): throwing out to 120 feet

RHP Justin Miller (Tommy John on April 12): 30-pitch bullpen Tuesday

RHP Matt West (Tommy John on Aug. 12): Throwing out to 60 feet

He said it

"It's part of baseball. I was rookie a few years ago. I think every season has gone by too fast. But I'm happy, and everything I can do to help a young guy in here, I'll do it."
