ARLINGTON -- UT Arlington started a season 3-0 for the first time since 2001 by beating Louisiana Tech 9-3 Sunday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark.

J.M. Twichell finished a home run shy of the cycle and Jake Pinchback went 4 for 5 in the Mavericks' 13-hit attack.

Twichell stroked a single, triple and double in his first three three-at-bats. The first baseman scored three runs and drove in a run.

He had two at-bats to hit a home run for the cycle, but walked and was hit by a pitch.

Also for the Mavericks, Travis Sibley had a hit and two runs scored, Matt Shortall went 2 for 2 with an RBI, Darien McLemore had two hits and an RBI and Greg McCall finished with two RBIs.

Brad Vachon went five scoreless innings to earn the win in relief.

"This was a good weekend for us," UT Arlington coach Darin Thomas said. "Twichell is going to be a middle of the order guy for us and he had a great day today. More importantly, we scored in every inning except the seventh."

UTA puts its 3-0 record up against Texas at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Austin.
