College notes: UT Arlington wins softball doubleheader

UT Arlington softball won a doubleheader on Saturday, winning both games 1-0 at the UCF Holiday Classic in Orland, Fla.

The Mavericks upped their record to 3-1.

In the opener, UTA beat Florida A&M when Teri Lyles gave up six hits in six innings. She struck out eight. The only run was scored on an infield single by Meagan Michele.

In the second game, Callie Collins gave up five hits. She struck out seven and did not issue a walk. Rebecca Stokes had a run-scoring single in the third inning.

The Mavericks' men's tennis team lost to No. 18 Baylor 7-0. UTA's record falls to 1-2.

TCU

Women's tennis: TCU beat visiting Pepperdine 6-1. The Horned Frogs upped their record to 4-1.

Texas Wesleyan

Men's basketball: Mo Weathers scored 21 points, leading the Rams to an 83-72 victory at Wiley College. Wesleyan is 17-11 for the season and 10-10 in conference play.

Women's basketball: Wesleyan had its seven-game winning streak snapped when it fell to Wiley 87-71.

North Texas

Women's tennis: North Texas won its first conference match of the season, beating Florida International 5-2 in Mobile, Ala.

Hayes honored

Former Ohio State players and coaches were among the 1,000 people who gathered in Columbus, Ohio, to mark the 100th anniversary of legendary football coach Woody Hayes' birth.
