College notes: UTA softball team splits opening doubleheader

UT Arlington opened its softball season at the UCF Holiday Inn Select in Orlando, Fla., with a 5-3 win over Buffalo and a 1-0 loss in eight innings against Central Florida.

Meagan Michele hit a two-run home run in the season-opening victory against Buffalo in new Mavericks coach Kristie Fox's debut. Pitcher Teri Lyles added a two-run double and scored on a double by Rachel Forshaw in the third as the Mavericks extended their lead to 5-1.

Lyles gave up three runs on five hits with two errors for UTA. She struck out five to pick up the victory.

In the second game, UTA's Callie Collins (0-1) shut out Central Florida for seven innings, but took the loss in the eighth when Kahley Novak begin the extra inning as the free runner on second, stole third and scored on a single by Mariah Garcia.

The Mavericks will play a doubleheader today, starting at 8 a.m., against Florida A&M and Stetson.

TCU riding high

The No. 8-ranked TCU equestrian team cruised to its fourth consecutive victory at home, rolling past Fresno State 14-6 at Turning Point Ranch in Springtown.

The Frogs, who outscored the Bulldogs by a total score of 1,507.5-1,448.5, moved to 5-3 and are on a two-meet winning streak. Individually, Demi Stiegler, Taylor Alexander and Samantha Bayer all picked up Most Outstanding Performer accolades.

Mountain West Conference: The league announced that the men's and women's basketball tournaments are staying in Las Vegas through 2016. The MWC board of directors approved a three-year extension to continue holding the tournaments at the Thomas & Mack Center. Las Vegas has served as the host site for the MWC from 2000-03 and 2007-present.

West Virginia football: The Mountaineers signed running back Jacky Marcellus. The 5-foot-8 Marcellus ran for 374 yards and caught 25 passes for 251 yards last season at Florida's Immokalee High School before undergoing knee surgery. As a junior he scored 17 touchdowns.

Alabama football: The university has barred three players from campus after their arrest on robbery charges. Eddie Williams, Tyler Hayes and D.J. Pettway have been charged in separate robberies of two students on campus early Monday.

Stanford football: Backup quarterback and former starter Josh Nunes will miss spring practices with a workout-related injury.
