A 43-year-old man who tried to run for help during a robbery at a Grand Prairie apartment complex Friday morning was fatally shot after being chased by the robber, police officials said.

Paul Rodriguez of Grand Prairie was taken to a hospital but pronounced dead a short time after the shooting at the Quail Ridge Apartments at 1919 W. Tarrant Road.

Police were dispatched to the complex shortly before 1 a.m. after a resident in the area reported hearing gunfire and then heard someone screaming, according to press release by the Grand Prairie Police Department.

Responding officers found a woman screaming in the parking lot who directed them to Rodriguez, the release states.

The woman told police she had driven Rodriguez to the complex and that while sitting in the car, the suspect began banging on her window.

"When she turned around to see who it was, she noticed that the suspect was banging on the window with a gun and demanding she give him her property," the release states.

Rodriguez had jumped out of the car and ran toward an apartment to seek help when the robber gave chase, firing several times at the fleeing man. Rodriguez was struck at least once, the release states.

The release states police are processing several pieces of evidence that were located at the scene.

Anyone with information about the fatal shooting is asked to call the Criminal Investigation Hotline at 972-237-8877 or Crime Stoppers at 972-988-TIPS. Crime Stoppers offers reward money of up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest in the case.
