FORT WORTH -- An 8-acre site along the Trinity River in the Edwards Ranch development in southwest Fort Worth will be home to the fourth physician-owned hospital in the Metroplex to be built by Forest Park Medical Center.

Construction has started on the $140 million, 150,000-square-foot facility, which is slated to open in mid-2014.

The Dallas-based company began building surgical hospitals in 2009. It has locations in Dallas and Frisco and will open one in June in Southlake.

The three-story Fort Worth hospital will be along the Clear Fork of the Trinity River and the Chisholm Trail Parkway, which is under construction, near Bryant Irvin Road.

Dr. J. Robert Wyatt, an ear, nose and throat surgeon, and one of four founders of Forest Park Medical Center, said its developer, Neal Richards Group, looked at a number of Fort Worth locations before selecting this site.

"It's a great location with great access," said Wyatt, managing director of operations for Forest Park. "We didn't see anything else that we were as excited about."

The facility will feature a limestone exterior and blend in with the rise of the riverbank, Wyatt said.

The hospital will have 48 private inpatient beds, including VIP suites for relatives, six intensive care beds, 12 operating suites, two special-procedure rooms and an emergency room.

The medical industry has seen growing development of smaller specialty hospitals, such as those for cardiac care and orthopedics. Wyatt said there is also growing demand for smaller surgical hospitals, where physicians have a role in management and operations.

The Fort Worth area was no exception, he said. The new center will not provide cardiac care and won't deliver babies, but "we will do everything else," Wyatt said. "We are a fully licensed and fully accredited facility."

The project is being financed with $30 million in private equity, with the remainder from a consortium of banks led by Texas Capital Bank, Wyatt said.

The hospital will employ workers for about 300 full-time equivalent positions.

Forest Park Medical Center will open a hospital in San Antonio about the same time it opens its Fort Worth location.

Edwards Ranch sold the property to the hospital group in December. In 2006, the Edwards family said it would begin developing the remaining 850 acres in the legendary ranch between Bryant Irvin Road and Hulen Street, and from Vickery Boulevard to south of Interstate 20.
