State Rep. Lon Burnam filed House Bill 1300 Thursday, on Valentine's Day, that gives same-gender couples the right to be married.

"I have been married for 33 years and it has been the greatest and most rewarding experience of my life," said Burnam, D-Fort Worth. "It is past time for our state to get right on this issue and fulfill the promise of individual freedom that is supposed to be the birthright of every Texan."

In Texas, voters approved a constitutional amendment banning same-sex civil unions and marriages in Texas in 2005.

Burnam's bill states that a man and a woman, a man and a man or a woman and woman could get married. The measure is a companion to constitutional amendments that would repeal the 2005 constitutional amendment defining marriage as only being between a man and a woman.

"This is a civil rights issue, an economic justice issue and a family values issue," Burnam said. "This is not just about the word 'marriage;' it is about extending vital legal protections to Texas families that suffer from living in a state where others' bigotry puts their families at risk."
