Without castigating Texas' entire congressional delegation, there are members whom I consider a detriment to good government. Rep. Steve Stockman, R-Friendswood, is a sterling example.

To make some sort of twisted ideological statement, Stockman invited anti-Obama rocker and conservative loudmouth Ted Nugent to be his guest at President Obama's State of the Union address. Nugent was recently investigated by the Secret Service for allegedly making threatening statements toward the president. He promised, however, to "demilitarize" before attending, referring to the carrying of a weapon. Stockman has also called for President Obama's impeachment.

Two other examples are Sen. John Cornyn and new Sen. Ted Cruz, who were two of only three senators to vote against the confirmation of John Kerry as Secretary of State -- an inexplicable vote to many observers. Cruz has already established himself as a bomb-thrower who fires away at opponents of his views with indiscriminate vehemence.

Texas has a number of thoughtful and discerning lawmakers in Congress. Those mentioned above are not among them. These irresponsible members of Congress do a disservice to the rest of the delegation and to Texas as a whole.
