The Sunday story "State eyes allowing open carry of guns" has justification since 29 states have already implemented legislation to allow it.

Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson is in the vanguard of the movement to include Texas with this legislation. Eighteen years ago, he championed the law that legalized the right to carry concealed handguns. As he said, "One hundred years ago in Texas, honest men carried openly and only criminals carried concealed."

More than 585,000 Texans hold concealed handgun licenses, and the time is right to give Texans the added option to open carry.
