KELLER — The speed limit on Rufe Snow Drive is now consistent for the entire length of the roadway in Keller.
On Feb. 5, City Council unanimously approved increasing the speed from 30 to 40 mph from Keller Parkway south to Rapp Road, to match the existing speed limit from Rapp Road to the south city limits at the Bursey Road intersection.Speed limit on Rufe Snow Drive in North Richland Hills is 40 miles per hour up to Keller’s southern city limits."We approached this very similar to what we did on North Tarrant Parkway," said Gregory Dickens, director of public works, during a pre-council work session.City Council voted May 1 to change the speed limit from 30 mph to 40 mph on the North Tarrant Parkway after construction was complete to expand the road to four lanes. To determine the best maximum speed limit, a study was conducted on North Tarrant Parkway in three locations during a three day period. Based on the results, the speed limit was raised to 40 mph.Rufe Snow Drive was recently improved and increased in width from Rapp Road north to Bear Creek Parkway. The project began in May 2011 and was mostly complete in August, with the exception of landscaping and irrigation.Dickens said in order to determine the appropriate maximum speed limit on Rufe Snow Drive, a similar speed study was conducted at four locations. The study revealed the average speed during a three day period was 42.2 mph.Average vehicles per day at the four sites combined during the study were 13,260.Dickens said the study was based on the 85th percentile, a value used by many states and cities for establishing regulatory speed zones.Mark Hafner, police chief and director of public safety, said officials waited for completion of the project before conducting the traffic study. The new speed limit signs were posted before the end of the week.Susan McFarland, 817-390-7547 Twitter: @susanmcfarland1
