DENTON -- Florida International overcame a 26-point performance by North Texas freshman Loryn Goodwin to send the Mean Green to a second straight home loss, 72-63 Saturday night at the Super Pit.
With five games remaining in the season, the win lifts the Panthers (15-9, 9-6) a game ahead of North Texas (9-15, 8-7) in the hunt for a top-five seed and first-round bye at the Sun Belt Conference tournament.The teams traded the lead until late in the second half, when the rebounding deficit and poor free-throw shooting caught up to the Mean Green. FIU collected 17 offensive boards while North Texas hauled in only 10, and outshot the Mean Green from the free-throw line 93 percent to 45."We played hard enough, we just weren't good enough," North Texas coach Mike Petersen said. "We didn't make enough plays."North Texas begins a two-game road trip at Louisiana-Monroe on Thursday.
