College notes: Recruit gets dad, not mom, to OK signing with Arkansas

A day later than he intended highly coveted running back Alex Collins from South Plantation High near Fort Lauderdale, Fla., signed with Arkansas on Thursday and did so with his father providing the written consent required by NCAA rules.

Collins' mother, Andrea McDonald, would not sign the letter of intent on Wednesday, evidently concerned with her son being so far from home. Thursday a law firm said that McDonald retained its services to represent "the family's interests."

Collins had been committed to Miami until November.

TCU golfers slip to 6th

TCU fell from a share of the lead into a tie for sixth place after Thursday's second round of the Amer Ari Invitational in Kona, Hawaii.

Washington grabbed the lead at 21 under overall, while UCLA (19 under), Texas and USC (each 14 under) and Georgia Tech (10) -- all top-10 teams -- also jumped past the 16th-ranked Frogs.

TCU senior Daniel Jennevret, the individual leader after the first round, fell from a 67 to a 74, and is tied for 16th at 3 under, four strokes off the lead set by Texas' Cody Gribble and UCLA's Pontus Widegren.

Briefly

Football attendance: Michigan was the national leader for the 15th straight year. Michigan averaged a record 112,252 fans for six home games, breaking its record set over eight home games in 2011. Also averaging in six figures were Ohio State (105,330), Alabama (101,722) and Texas (100,884).

Oklahoma State football: Mike Yurcich, who helped Shippensburg put up big numbers in Division II that past two seasons, was hired as OSU's new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

New Mexico football: School officials said anonymous allegations, from a letter signed "Sincerely, UNM Senior Football Players," that football coach Bob Davie discriminates against players based on their race are "unfounded and untrue."

Notre Dame : The Irish will be in the Big East at least one more season. Athletic director Jack Swarbrick said the university was unable to reach an agreement to leave for the Atlantic Coast Conference before next season.

Florida basketball: Florida will be without forward Will Yeguete (knee surgery) for at least the rest of the regular season.
