2012 record: 8-5

Players signed: 23 Signees from Texas: 22

Offense: The Bears have a quarterback opening and incoming freshman Chris Johnson is expected to compete for the starting job along with Bryce Petty and Seth Russell. Whoever wins it will likely be eyeing Fort Worth Southwest's Robbie Rhodes, one of the top wide receivers in the country.

Defense: Baylor had a major addition to its class when Waco High defensive lineman Andrew Billings announced he'd be staying home. Linebacker Brian Nance, a Euless Trinity product, will join the Bears a year later than expected and should challenge for playing time right away. The Bears also had solid recruits in DBs Alfred Pullom, Taion Sells and Kyle Fulks, as well as linemen Byron Bonds and K.J. Smith.

Immediate impact: Robbie Rhodes could have stayed close to home by going to TCU, could have joined the defending champions at Alabama or even gone to the two biggest programs in Texas -- Texas or Texas A&M. But he chose the Bears, who run a high-octane offense under Art Briles.

Area ties: Wesley Harris, FW Southwest; Xavier Phillips, FW All Saints; Robbie Rhodes, FW Southwest; Brian Nance (Hargrave Military Academy) played at Euless Trinity.
