I was encouraged that bipartisanship was flickering to life again when the Senate confirmed John Kerry as secretary of state by a vote of 94-3. For Texans, the vote was significant because two of the three dissenting votes were cast by Sens. John Cornyn and Ted Cruz.

While both sides of the Senate aisle praised Kerry as one of the best-qualified candidates ever nominated for the position, his extraordinary leadership skills were entirely overlooked by Cornyn and Cruz. Perhaps our senators, who so embarrassed Texas by their actions, didn't overlook Kerry's leadership skills -- perhaps they simply did not recognize leadership qualities.

The Kerry vote was embarrassing, but the vote against Hurricane Sandy aid is playing with the future health, safety and welfare of the people of this state. Texas has almost as much shoreline vulnerable to hurricane damage as Florida, and Texas is part of "Tornado Alley." Now, will disaster relief for Texas be considered?
